How Amazon picks your shipping weight

Dimensional weight is a size-based weight: length × width × height in cm, divided by 5,000. For parcels and most oversize tiers, Amazon charges on whichever is higher: the actual unit weight or the dimensional weight. Envelopes, Low-Price FBA, special oversize and those listed categories use the unit weight only.

So a light product in a bulky box can be charged as if it were heavy.

A worked example

Illustrative figures at normal rates: a product weighs 1.2 kg and ships in a 30 × 20 × 15 cm box.

  • Before: the box is too deep for a small parcel, so it's a standard parcel. Dimensional weight is 30 × 20 × 15 ÷ 5,000 = 1.8 kg, above the 1.2 kg unit weight. The 1,900 g band costs £3.48.
  • After: a 30 × 20 × 11 cm box fits the small parcel tier. Dimensional weight is 30 × 20 × 11 ÷ 5,000 = 1.32 kg, so the 1,400 g band applies at £3.05.
  • Saving: £3.48 − £3.05 = £0.43 per unit, or about £0.44 once the 2% surcharge is added.
  • Over a month of 2,000 units: 2,000 × £0.43 × 1.02 = £877.20, before VAT.

What it means for your bookkeeping

  • One account for fulfilment. Post the per-unit fee, the peak uplift and the fuel surcharge to the same FBA fulfilment account, so margins stay comparable. Our fuel surcharge increase article explains the rise to 2%.
  • VAT is reclaimable. UK FBA fees carry 20% UK VAT. If you're VAT-registered, you can reclaim it. See reclaiming VAT on Amazon seller fees.
  • Expect two rates in one settlement. A settlement spanning 15 October or 14 January holds fees at both normal and peak rates. The Amazon peak season 2026 fees article covers the dates.
  • Check the fee per unit. If a unit's fee jumps, Amazon may have measured the product differently. Compare the fee in the settlement with this table.
  • Keep the dated rate card as evidence of which rate applied when.
