Amazon Cuts the Referral Fee on Clothing Under £15

Announced by Amazon on 15 April 2024, effective 15 May 2024 — followed by an admission that some sales were overcharged.

Last updated: 19 September 2026

Historical update: this article covers an Amazon announcement from 15 April 2024. Amazon's fees, rules and programmes may have changed since — check Seller Central for the current position before acting on it.

In brief: from 15 May 2024, Amazon's referral fee on Clothing and Accessories priced under £15 fell from 15% to 8%. The same cut applied under €15 in the Belgian, Dutch, French, German, Italian and Spanish stores and under SEK 175 in Sweden; in Poland the rate fell from 10% to 8% under PLN 65. Two days after it started, Amazon said a technical fault had charged some eligible sales the old 15% and promised to refund the overcharge.

The 2024 clothing referral fee thresholds

Store Price below Old rate New rate
UK £15 15% 8%
Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain, Italy €15 15% 8%
Sweden SEK 175 15% 8%
Poland PLN 65 10% 8%

Other categories kept their existing referral fees.

A worked example

A seller sells 3,000 T-shirts a month at £12. At 15% the referral fee was £1.80 each; at 8% it's 96p — 84p saved per sale, or about £2,520 a month. If the first few days were wrongly charged at 15%, the refund would appear later as a credit.

What happened next

In December 2025 Amazon cut clothing referral fees again, to 5% up to £15 and 10% between £15 and £20 — see the 2026 fee changes.

What it means for your bookkeeping

  • Check the rate you were charged. The overcharge shows that fee changes don't always apply cleanly. Spot-check a few orders in the settlement after any fee change.
  • Refunds belong against the fee. When Amazon reimburses overcharged fees, post the credit to your referral fee account, not as income, so the period's fee cost is right.
  • Repricing near £15 matters. With a much lower rate below £15, a product priced just above the threshold may earn more at £14.99.
  • VAT treatment in 2024. In May 2024 Amazon still billed UK fees from Luxembourg under the reverse charge; UK VAT on fees only began on 1 August 2024 — see VAT on Amazon fees from August 2024.
