Amazon Poland Launches with Lower Referral Fees

In brief: the Amazon Poland referral fee was cut for a year at launch: Amazon.pl opened to sellers on 2 March 2021. To mark the launch, Amazon cut referral fees on Amazon.pl for 12 months. Home & Kitchen, Sports & Outdoors and Clothing & Shoes, for example, dropped from 15% to 10%, while Computers and Consumer Electronics went from 7% to 5%. Sales on Amazon.pl are priced in Polish złoty (PLN), so Amazon pointed sellers to the European Central Bank's euro–złoty rate when setting prices.

A worked example

A seller sells PLN 20,000 of kitchenware a month on Amazon.pl. At 10% instead of 15%, the referral fee is PLN 2,000 rather than PLN 3,000 — PLN 1,000 a month saved during the promotion, or about PLN 12,000 over the year.

What it means for your bookkeeping

• A new currency. Amazon.pl settles in PLN. Record sales and fees in złoty and convert consistently, or use a separate PLN bank or currency account.

• Promotions end. After 12 months, standard referral rates returned; margins on Amazon.pl fell accordingly.

• Selling in Poland may bring VAT duties. Where stock is held or sales are made can create Polish VAT obligations; take advice.
