In brief: VAT Services on Amazon was Amazon's paid programme for registering and filing VAT through partner tax firms. Amazon closed it on 31 October 2024. Sellers could stay with the same tax provider — who would contact them to sign up directly and then bill them directly — or choose another provider. Amazon said it intended to launch a replacement programme in 2025.
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| August 2024 | Tax providers contacted their VAT Services clients to set up direct accounts |
| Up to the September 2024 period (filed October 2024) | Filings still handled through VAT Services on Amazon |
| From the October 2024 period | Filings and charges handled directly by the tax provider (first monthly return due November 2024; first quarterly return due January 2025) |
| By 1 October 2024 | Deadline to opt out if switching to a different provider |
| Until 31 August 2025 | VAT documents downloadable from Seller Central |
Your VAT filing fees moved off Amazon. Previously the cost came through Amazon; afterwards it arrived as invoices from the tax provider. Record them as professional fees, with whatever VAT is shown on the provider's invoice.
Download your history. Registration certificates, filing confirmations and past returns were only available in Seller Central until 31 August 2025. Any seller still relying on those should have copies in their own records.
Check for a filing gap. The handover fell mid-quarter for many sellers. Confirm that every period was filed by someone — a missed EU return means penalties.
UK returns are separate. If your UK VAT return is filed through Xero, it wasn't affected; the programme mainly handled EU registrations.
Your own records still matter. Filings move, but the underlying numbers come from your books — see which VAT return boxes Amazon sales hit and Amazon VAT tax codes in Xero.
TrueBooks gives you a UK VAT audit view by HMRC box built from your Amazon settlements, so whoever files your return works from the same numbers that are in Xero. See the Amazon Xero integration.
