Guide · UK VAT · Checked 11 August 2026
Checked against Amazon's Ads help page on payment methods, updated 11 August 2026. How you pay for sponsored ads decides whether the cost and its VAT appear in your Amazon settlement.
Last updated: 27 October 2026
In brief: Amazon advertising VAT is reclaimable if you're VAT-registered, but only when each ads invoice reaches your books once. Sponsored ads on amazon.co.uk are billed with UK VAT. Costs taken from your seller balance appear in your settlement as Cost of Advertising; card and invoice payments don't appear there at all. Since 2 April 2026 Amazon has been telling a small number of advertisers, directly, that their main payment method is moving from card to seller balance or Pay by Invoice, with the card kept as a backup. So the route can change without you touching a setting.
Sellers can pay for sponsored ads in three ways. Each one leaves a different trail in your records.
| Payment method | When Amazon takes payment | In your settlement? | Where the VAT figure comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seller account balance | When spend reaches your credit limit, or at month end | Yes, as Cost of Advertising | The ads invoice behind each deduction |
| Credit or debit card | Each time spend reaches your credit limit, or at month end | No | The ads invoice |
| Pay by Invoice | One invoice at month end, due 30 days later by bank transfer | No | The ads invoice |
Balance payments come out of your available funds, not your total balance. If your available funds can't cover an invoice and you have a backup card, Amazon charges the whole invoice to the card. So one month can mix two routes.
For sponsored ads, an invoice is raised each time your spend reaches your credit limit. That limit starts at £50 and steps up after each successful payment, to £150, £200, £350 and then £500. Some accounts have a higher limit. Spend that never reaches the limit is billed on the second day of the following month.
Credits for invalid clicks, promotional credits and clicks beyond a monthly budget show as adjustments on the invoice, and Amazon applies credits before charging you. Take the VAT figure from the invoice itself. You can download each invoice as a PDF or CSV from Billing in the ads console.
Illustrative figures: a seller pays for ads from their seller balance. October's ads invoices total £1,200 before VAT. The last one, for £200, is issued on 2 November.
Two mistakes cost real money. Enter the invoices as bills as well as posting the settlement lines, and you claim £480 instead of £240. Assume every ad cost comes through the settlement when some invoices are charged to a card, and those invoices never reach Xero, so their VAT is never claimed.
Open Billing, then Payment settings, in the ads console and note your current payment method. If it changed after Amazon's notice, check settlements since then for Cost of Advertising lines and remove any matching bills. Make sure your VAT number is saved under VAT Information in Seller Central's Account Info.
TrueBooks posts ad charges deducted in your settlements to their own advertising account with the right UK VAT, ready for your VAT return. Its VAT audit view shows the result by HMRC box. See what lands in Xero.
